Solarcity have come up with a ‘price and technology breakthrough’ – they are combining solar panels with Panasonic’s lithium-ion batteries, allowing homeowners to store excess solar energy generated during the day so it can be used at night and when grid prices are high. Customers can add battery storage for an upfront payment of $2,500 plus a fixed monthly fee that covers all the company’s energy services.
Meanwhile the Australian Climate Council predicts that “On the basis of a $10,000 battery system with a payback of 10 years, …half of all Australian households will adopt battery storage for their solar systems, with capacity growing 50-fold and the market’s value ballooning to $24bn.”
