    Hi all

    I have just loaded in the Best Practice Library under Housing Affordability a resource developed by Beacon which draws together everything we know and can find out about rental housing.

    It’s a response to the debate about housing WoFs, something which we feel needs a little caution. There’s the danger, in particular, that a bare minimum becomes the default standard – however, it’s a standard that doesn’t give health and wellbeing outcomes. We would advocate that a WoF is only the first step for New Zealand homes that should all be on a longer pathway towards the warm, dry efficient homes all residents need.

    Debates are always better when underpinned by knowledge, so this resource is an attempt to collect and organise what is known about the rental housing market and rental housing performance in New Zealand.

    It covers:
    * quality of rental housing stock
    * the impact of poor quality rental housing on tenants
    * supply and demand in the rental housing market
    * current interventions
    * characteristics of landlords and tenants
    * the policy and legislative context
    * how the rental housing market can be segmented.

    We have then made some recommendations to improve rental housing. This is a living document – we are sharing it around in order to get feedback and issue an updated version. So we’re looking for your thoughts – either post them here or send to Vicki Cowan vickic@beaconpathway.co.nz

    You can also download the resource at http://www.beaconpathway.co.nz/existing-homes/article/rental_housing

    Thanks
    Andrea
